The SmartBox Backup is a revolutionary backup and power storage solution for your home that plugs into an existing outlet without the expense and hassle of traditional backup power systems. Conveniently located under the pedestal of your electric dryer, it provides quiet, safe, indoor backup power and storage and is a great alternative to a gas generator. Versatile and smart grid ready, the SmartBox Backup can also be used to store power generated by solar panels or a wind turbine, or provide additional storage capacity for the emerging smart grid. It’s the ideal power storage solution for your home. Easy to install and no additional wiring.
How It Works
The SmartBox Backup installs conveniently under the pedestal of your electric dryer. Simple plug-and-play operation connects to an existing electric dryer outlet and synchronizes with the power in your home to charge the unit’s onboard storage batteries. During a power outage, the SmartBox Backup automatically supplies emergency backup power for lights, essential household appliances like a refrigerator, home electronics or a home office computer, anywhere in your home, for up to 8 hours.

There a lot of backup systems on the market. How is the SmartBox Backup different from other backup systems?
In two words: simplicity and cost. The SmartBox Backup is designed to be simple to setup and install. You simply install it under the base of your electric dryer, and then just plug it in - the SmartBox Backup is ready to go. And, the SmartBox Backup is affordable. Unlike traditional systems that cost thousands of dollars to install and require a dedicated circuit panel, the SmartBox Backup allows homeowners to plug backup power into an existing outlet.
Is the SmartBox Backup available for purchase and where can I buy one?
The SmartBox Backup is not yet available for purchase and still in development as we work to ensure that it is compliant with all applicable safety and regulatory requirements. We expect to make it available through home improvement centers and major retailers, and look forward to providing more details about our progress in the near future.
Is a 220V/240V 50 Hz model available for use in Europe, Africa and Asia?
Yes, we are planning to manufacture a 220V/240V model for Europe, Africa and Asia shortly after the product is launched in North America.
I already have an off-grid system. Can the SmartBox Backup be used with my existing system?
The SmartBox Backup produces grid-ready AC power output and is perfectly compatible with an existing off-grid system.
Can the SmartBox Backup be used with my RV?
It depends on the configuration. The SmartBox Backup produces grid-ready AC power and may not work with all RV power systems since RV power systems normally draw power from either shore power or a generator, or directly from the DC power bus. It's best to consult with your RV manufacturer or RV operating manual.
What about safety in the event of a power outage? How would utility workers be protected?
Safety of utility line workers is paramount. During a power outage, patent-pending SmartBox™ technology prevents power from being fed back onto the electrical grid.
What about safety for homeowners?
Safety of homeowners is paramount and the SmartBox Backup has built-in circuit protection, uses a power inverter that meets all safety and certification requirements, including National Electrical Code (NEC 690) requirements.
Is it OK to plug power directly into an electrical outlet? Won’t that overload the circuit?
Our patent-pending SmartBox™ technology provides built-in circuit protection. If there is ever an overload condition on the circuit, the SmartBox Backup will immediately stop generating power – within milliseconds – the same way it would in the event of a power failure.
What about maintenance and upkeep?
There are no moving parts and the SmartBox Bacjkup Unit is virtually maintenance free. Using the same proven design found in existing systems, the SmartBox Backup should only need periodic inspection from time-to-time to ensure that it’s in proper working order.
What it is the life expectancy of the SmartBox Backup?
The SmartBox Backup is designed to last 15-20 years or more – though battery life may vary.
Can I combine the Smart Box Backup Unit with the SmartBox Solar Module or Wind Turbine?
Yes, you can connect up to 5 SmartBox Solar Modules and 1 SmartBox Wind Turbine (up to a total of 1000W per electrical circuit) to one or more outlets.
Will the SmartBox Backup work in my home without an Internet connection?
Yes, the SmartBox Solar Module will work without an Internet connection. An Internet connection is only required for product registration and to take advantage of the Smartbox’s optional online monitoring and tracking features.
